Olympia Education Foundation Announces Departure of Executive Director Katy Johansson

OLYMPIA, WA — The Olympia Education Foundation Board of Trustees recently announced the upcoming departure of Executive Director Katy Johansson. Johansson has led the organization with distinction since her appointment in 2019. Johansson is stepping down from her role at the Foundation to work directly with students at her alma mater, Capital High School. She leaves behind a legacy of expanded student support and deepened community partnerships.

During her tenure, Johansson was instrumental in cultivating community relationships and supporting student potential across the Olympia School District. Under her leadership, the Foundation:

  • Successfully implemented the 2021-2023 Strategic Plan and launched the subsequent 2024-2027 roadmap.

  • Expanded the impact of Opportunity Grants, which provide educators with funding for innovative projects that close opportunity gaps.

  • Strengthened the Principal’s Emergency Fund, ensuring immediate support for students facing urgent needs like clothing, food and medical supplies.

  • Championed the Student & Community Well-Being series, providing vital mental health resources and education to families.

"Katy's deep roots in the Olympia community and her firsthand experience in K-12 classrooms allowed her to lead with a unique perspective," said Vice President Annie Pocklington. "Her enthusiasm for our mission has been a tremendous asset, and while we will miss her leadership, the Foundation is well-positioned for its next chapter of development."

Johansson expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve for the past seven years, stating, “I could not feel more grateful to live in a community that values schools and their students, and for the support that donors and local businesses have shown the Olympia Education Foundation.

“I am leaving this role with the same belief in how critical the Foundation’s work is as the day I started this job.” She continued, “Returning to a school building, where every day I work with students who have urgent basic needs, has made me even more appreciative of the Principal’s Emergency Fund and the opportunity it affords school staff to respond to those needs immediately.”

Johansson looks forward to continuing to support the Foundation for years to come.

The Board of Trustees has initiated a search for a new Executive Director to lead the Foundation’s continued efforts to support the district's students and educators. Information for the position can be found here. Johansson will remain in her position through May 2026 to ensure a smooth transition.
